Our Organisational Structure

SLMet operates as a national agency under the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, bringing together diverse expertise to serve Sierra Leone's weather and climate needs. Our team of experts delivers comprehensive services across seven key areas: aviation meteorology for safe flights, hydrology for water resource management, climate services including seasonal forecasts, marine weather for coastal and offshore activities, environmental monitoring for air quality and sustainability, agro-meteorology to support farming communities, and daily weather forecasts for the general public. This multidisciplinary approach ensures we can provide specialized services for every sector of society - from farmers and fishers to pilots and government planners. We maintain weather stations across all regions and work closely with international partners to ensure our services meet world-class standards while addressing the unique needs of Sierra Leone's communities and economy.

Our Journey Through Time

1920s

1929

Sierra Leone became the regional hub for weather services as headquarters of the British West African Meteorological Services

1960s

1960

After independence, we established the Sierra Leone Meteorological Department, quickly becoming one of West Africa's most advanced weather services with stations nationwide

1991

1991-2002

The civil war devastated our infrastructure, destroying most weather equipment and forcing us to rebuild from the ground up

2010s

2010

With international support, we began modernizing with new automatic weather stations and digital systems to better serve communities

2017

Parliament created the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency through Act No. 8, giving us stronger legal authority to serve the nation

2020s

2022

Our founding Act was strengthened with amendments, expanding our capabilities and services
